The country's revitalised telecom sector is seeing the blossom of reforms, from connecting people with 5G services to cutting the cost of operations, and is likely to attract more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore investments to build up networks in the new year.
The telecom sector entered a new chapter in 2022 after serving as the model for India's growth story, becoming a debt-ridden industry that saw several businesses wither away, and now riding the tide of reforms and significant investments. While the Adani group has yet to reveal its whole strategy for the telecom industry, Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, has pledged to invest Rs. 2 lakh crore to roll out a 5G network throughout the nation by December 2023.
Awaited for four to five years, the introduction of 5G has made this year thrilling. This is a significant advance. Since this year is only the beginning of 5G deployment, we anticipate a substantial rollout the following year. All of us are focusing on use cases.
We are requesting unique use cases from state governments, ministries, startups, and innovators for the Indian market in order to both open up new commercial opportunities and address some pressing societal issues, said K Rajaraman, the telecom secretary, according to PTI.
He added that the government will keep taking steps to reduce the cost of doing business for telecom operators, which would increase margins for the industry, which has been struggling under a heavy debt load for more than ten years.
For the spectrum it must pay for over a 20-year period, Reliance Jio has committed Rs 87,946.93 crore, leaving a balance of Rs 1.12 lakh crore. According to insiders, the business would invest the majority of the Rs 1.12 lakh on 5G expenditure in 2023, despite having invested a portion in developing its own 5G core.
